One of the most frequent questions we get from our guests is -What are the best places to eat in Belgrade?

This week we’ll be tackling:

Restaurants in Dorćol

But let me give you a bit of info about this area of the Old Town (Belgrade Municipality).

  • Dorćol is the oldest part of Belgrade (one of the smallest as well)

  • It carries an enormous historical value and has a special place in the hearts of Belgradians

  • Its name is derived from the Turkish word “dörtyol”, which means “a place where 4 roads cross”. These 4 roads are a reference to 4 great trade roads leading to Istambul, Vidin, Vienna and Dubrovnik.

  • Dorćol was known as an important trade centre back in the day. Its closeness to the river and the above-mentioned roads allowed it to become just that.

  • Dorćol, today, can boast to have the oldest house in Belgrade on its grounds (Cara Dušana 10)

  • First “skyscrapers” (more like 2-3 floor houses) grew here, during the reign of the Austro-Hungarians in Belgrade. Although, when the Turks won Belgrade back they either demolished them or left them to deteriorate.

  • The Turks preferred the Balkan style houses (one floor and a big backyard), one of the typical houses in this style is The Museum of Vuk and Dositej (Gospodar-Jevremova 21)

  • Dorćol has always been a multinational area of Belgrade.

  • Dorćol holds the remnants of the old Jewish quarter (manly destroyed during the II World War)

  • Keep your eyes open for some amazing Murals as you explore these historically rich streets

If this wasn’t enough to convince you to take a stroll down the streets of Dorćol to uncover all its secrets, then the rich offer of restaurants might do the trick.
